OVERVIEW As the Senior UX Designer for the Personalization feature in BMW’s new Android-based head unit, I was responsible for bringing the personalization capabilities of the existing Linux-based system to Android, leveraging Android’s flexibility while maintaining consistency with BMW’s ecosystem. This required careful UX decision-making to ensure a seamless, intuitive, and brand-aligned experience across both platforms.

Challenges & Solutions

Adapting a Legacy System to Android
The original Linux-based personalization system needed to be restructured to fit within Android’s ecosystem, ensuring feature parity without disrupting the user experience.

SOLUTION
Conducted a UX audit of the existing system and redefined user flows to align with Android interaction patterns, while maintaining BMW’s premium feel.

Balancing Flexibility & Simplicity Personalization allows users to customize various vehicle functions, but too many options could create complexity and cognitive overload.

SOLUTION Simplified navigation and categorization, ensuring high-priority settings were easily accessible while allowing deeper customization when needed.

 
Ensuring Multi-Brand Consistency (BMW & MINI)
The system had to work across BMW’s rectangular displays and MINI’s circular interface, requiring adaptive layouts and UI adjustments.

Designed scalable UI components that retained brand identity while adapting seamlessly to different screen formats.

Collaboration Across Teams
Aligning design decisions with technical limitations, product goals, and multiple stakeholder inputs across BMW’s global teams.
